On February 10th, Elizabeth Seton Children's School celebrated its 100th day of the school year - a milestone to recognize how far our students have come since September!
This year, our extraordinary students and educators marked the occasion with a special project to give back. In the spirit of compassion, tenderness and service demonstrated by our foundress, St. Elizabeth Seton, our school community was inspired to work together to collect 100 food and care items to donate to SPCA Westchester, one of the oldest humane societies in the country, located in Briarcliff Manor. The goal was well exceeded with a grand total of 500 items collected!
"Our kids love being nurturing," said Maureen Tomkiel, Executive Director of Elizabeth Seton Children's School. "And we wanted to give back because we get so much help from others in the community."
In addition to securing food, toys and cleaning supplies as part of this endeavor, our teaching staff incorporated meaningful lessons about animals, their habitats and needs, as well as the importance of helping others, into their classrooms throughout February.
"It's never too early to start teaching children about empathy," said Daniela Janniello, a teacher who helped lead this initiative. "We are building awareness about how our students share the earth with many animals, some of which require our special care and protection," she continued.
Last week, Lynn Peters, the SPCA's Volunteer Coordinator, visited to accept the donation and speak to our students about the work of the shelter along with a special, furry friend: a puppy named Pawline. "The tremendous outpouring of contributions to the donation drive you organized was quite overwhelming. Your community is truly kind and giving," Lynn said. "All items will be utilized toward the care and comfort of dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes."
"Thank you for having us," Lynn added. "Pawline appreciated the experience, as well. The looks on the faces of so many of the students as they met her said it all."
